A B2B store without Shopify Plus: is it possible?
Published on

If you run a B2B store, you tend to need different things than a B2C shop does. Shopify built Shopify Plus for exactly this kind of merchant. But what if upgrading to Plus is not possible, or simply not something you want to commit to? Can you still run a proper B2B store without it?
What does a B2B store actually need?
Having a B2B store built differs meaningfully from a B2C build. A business-to-business shop often needs a different catalogue, or different prices per customer. You usually want to stop consumers from creating an account and ordering at all. Order volumes tend to be higher, and the store has to show the right products at the right prices to the right customer group. You may also need specific rules for discounts or shipping. In short: there is a lot more to account for, and that can be a genuine challenge.
Is Shopify Plus the answer for B2B?
If you are starting a B2B store, Shopify is a strong platform to do it on, and Plus is its dedicated tier. It is built for larger, scalable operations with a high transaction count. Plus gives you a separate, dedicated storefront alongside your B2C shop, password-protected so only approved customers can browse and order.
That separate storefront is also customisable. You can show the same products as your B2C store, or adapt the catalogue entirely. Those products and pages are not indexed by Google, so they are visible only to customers with an account. You can even specify the catalogue per customer: buyers who should only see part of your range will see exactly what you decide. The same applies to pricing: prices and discounts can be set per collection or per customer. None of that is supported on the other Shopify plans.
The alternative: B2B without Shopify Plus
Running a B2B store, or planning one, but an upgrade to Plus is off the table? There are still ways to get the functionality you need. That upgrade can cost more than $2,000 a month, which for a new or smaller B2B operation is a serious commitment.
One of our clients faced exactly this. Plus was not viable on cost, but they genuinely needed B2B functionality the standard plans do not offer. They wanted prices visible only to logged-in customers, and the ability to approve account requests themselves. They also had specific requirements around shipping costs and minimum order values per country, because they ship internationally. None of that is supported out of the box.
With some targeted custom development we built a B2B store that met all of it. The shop and the products are publicly visible, but prices only appear once a customer logs in with an approved account. We made shipping costs country-specific and surfaced them on the cart page, so customers can only order when logged in and meeting the minimum order value for their country. A functioning B2B store, without Plus.
B2B features without Shopify Plus
Custom development opens up a lot on a regular Shopify plan. Building custom apps lets you implement customer-specific pricing, set up an approval process for new accounts, and create different catalogues for different customer groups. Through the Shopify API you can implement specific pricing rules, configure volume discounts, and even build complete B2B order management. Custom apps can add purchase limits, customer-specific catalogues and adapted checkout flows. Used well, Shopify's app architecture and APIs cover a great deal of B2B ground without moving to Plus. It does take an upfront investment in development, but that is often lower than the ongoing cost of a Plus subscription, and you end up with a solution that fits your business exactly.
So, a B2B store without Shopify Plus?
Back to the question we started with. Is it possible to run a B2B store without Shopify Plus? Yes. We understand that Plus adds up quickly and is not right for every B2B merchant. It is worth knowing that with the right custom work and a clear plan, a great deal is possible within your existing Shopify subscription. Curious what that would look like for your store?
