Shopify vs. Magento: which one should you pick?
Published on

Choosing an e-commerce platform can feel like picking an ice cream flavour in a shop with a hundred options: overwhelming, mildly stressful, and rather important for your taste buds. Or, in this case, your wallet. If you are weighing up Shopify against Magento, you could probably use a hand. Consider this a torch in that dark tunnel of options.
Shopify: the plug-and-play option
Shopify is the Apple of e-commerce platforms. Easy to use, quick to set up, and you do not need to be an IT genius to find your way around. With its friendly interface and enormous library of themes and apps, Shopify is the obvious choice for people who would rather spend their time selling than deciphering code. Hosting is included, so that is one thing off your plate, and support is available around the clock.
Beyond the ease of use, Shopify is serious about business. A wide range of accounting integrations makes your financial admin straightforward. And custom work does not have to be expensive: a bespoke Shopify store is often cheaper than people expect. Look at who runs on it: Netflix, and Kim Kardashian's Skims. Closer to home, we built a Shopify Plus store for John Beerens. Shopify is not just for small players; large businesses and B2B companies find a solid base for their ambitions, with room to grow.
Magento: built for customisation
Then there is Magento, the Swiss army knife of e-commerce platforms. Flexible, powerful, and able to personalise your store down to the last detail. But be warned: with great power comes great complexity. Magento suits businesses that are genuinely prepared to invest in development and custom work. If you have a team of web developers in your back pocket, Magento might well be your best friend.
Cost and scalability: what does your wallet prefer?
Let us talk money. Shopify works on a monthly subscription, which means a predictable expense. Ideal for a growing business that would rather not lie awake over unforeseen costs. Magento is a different story. The open-source version is free, but remember: free is rarely free. Hosting, themes, maintenance, plug-ins and especially custom development can push the real cost of Magento up considerably.
So: Shopify or Magento?
Standing at the starting line, wondering which way to go? In our experience it comes down to the size of your business, your technical capacity, and how much you are prepared to invest. Shopify wins on ease of use and speed to market. Magento is a reasonable choice for those who want to build something highly specific and are not afraid to roll up their sleeves, or to dig deep into their pockets.
And there you have it. We are a little biased towards Shopify (guilty as charged), but we appreciate good engineering, and Magento certainly has its charms.
Moving from Magento to Shopify?
More and more Magento merchants are making the switch: the maintenance cost of Magento 2 keeps climbing, while Shopify handles hosting, updates and security as standard. How that move works in practice, from extension audit to 301 redirects without losing rankings, is on our page about migrating from Magento to Shopify.
